Conceived in 1840-1, Lion qui marche and its pendant, Tigre qui marche, are among Barye's most reproduced works. Although over one hundred casts of the former and sixty of the latter were made during the sculptor's lifetime, the popularity of the models and proliferation of casts may be credited directly to Barbedienne, who edited both, numerously and in large quantities, from Barye's death, right up to the Second World War.
