The cabinet with a moulded top and four variously sized panelled and ripple moulded drawers, the sides with similar raised panels and decorated with brass strapwork clasps throughout, the stand with a scrolled foliate apron and bulbous spiral turned legs joined by similar stretchers and with turned feet

The contador is a typically Portuguese creation, with formal characteristics which differ from cabinets made elsewhere in Europe. Generally made from rosewood, the upper part is characterised by numerous apparently identical drawers and their evolution can be traced through the growing importance of their cornices, the increasingly complex form of their aprons, the turning of legs and stretchers and the design and distribution of their metal mounts.
