Hans Hartig primarily took small towns and harbours as his subject matter, especially in the region of East Prussia, Old Dresden and Pomerania. Situated in the latter, the important sea port of Stettin or Szczecin was often targeted during World War II, destroying large parts of the historical centre. The Polish administration started rebuilding after the war and turned Szczecin into what it is today: the cultural centre of Western Poland with one of the countries largest port complexes.
