This camp cup relates to the camp cups made by Richard Humphreys of Philadelphia for General George Washington in 1780 and for Washington's aide-de-camp, General Anthony Walton White (sold Christie's, 20 January 2005, lot 142).

Silversmith and Revolutionary patriot Daniel van Voorhis also served under George Washington, earning distinction at the Battle of Princeton on January 3, 1777. The present camp cup must date from the Revolutionary period, when Van Voorhis worked in Philadelphia (1775-1782).
