Made of American black walnut and yellow pine, this commode chair is a creative interpretation of the Queen Anne style, most likely made by a rural Pennsylvanian craftsman. Its inscription indicates that it was later owned by Dr. William R. DeWitt (b. 1827), who is listed as a physician living in Union, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania in the 1850 Census.
