These impressive armchairs, with their highly unusual star-adorned backs, closely resemble a model at Pavlovsk Palace which is illustrated in A. Chenevière, Russian Furniture, London, 1988, p. 107. Expressing clear geometrical forms with mahogany veneers and brass mounts, these chairs epitomise the 'Russian Jacob' style of furniture which was en vogue circa 1800 and can now be found in various Imperial Residences.
