A GERMAN ENGRAVED HORN POWDER-FLASK
Circa 1600
With flattened cowhorn body, one face with a central panel filled with sprays of flowers emerging from behind a rosette roundel, the reverse decorated with the figures of Salome presenting the head of the Baptist to her Mother before an encampment, brass top and base each punched with a band of small flowerheads, the top with rectangular cavity for filling closed by a sliding cover, its handle cast in the form of a winged ape, locked by its neck to a pivoted ring attached to the nozzle, the latter of octagonal section and fitted with spring-loaded cap, thumbpiece decorated with a lion mask in relief, and fitted with a single iron ring for suspension.
