A GERMAN GILT-BRONZE PRIMING-FLASK BEARING THE ARMS OF JULIUS ECHTER VON MESPELBRUNN, PRINCE BISHOP OF WÜRZBURG
Dated 1574
Of triangular form rising to a tapering nozzle moulded at its base and fitted with sprung pivoting cap, the body cast in low relief around three sides with a running design of interlaced strapwwork, the base sliding for filling, the front cast with the figure of Prince Ariovistus represented in 15th Century armour, above his head the date and, to his right, the arms of von Mespelbrunn quartered with those of the Bishopric of Würzburg, the back with the figure of Arminius holding the head of Quintilius Varus, inscribed with the letter 'L', with four rings at the sides, and in fine condition throughout.
