In this portrait Rembrandt wears military-style dress in an informal manner, complete with a 'point', a button on his shoulder with laces for attaching armour. He also sports an East Indian scarf that features in other works of the period. The dark shadow that envelopes the face was used in painted self-portraits of the time, and shows the influence of Caravaggio, whose paintings were immensely influential in the Netherlands from the 1620's onwards.
