The present composition is a variant after Reni's painting in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Palazzo Corsini, Rome. The angels in the upper right hand corner in Reni's original composition have been left out in the present lot. Numerous versions after Reni exist; for example in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich and in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore.
