In 1867 Sir Thomas Hanbury began laying out the gardens at La Mortola. His creation is still renowned today for its unique woodland style, that rambles along a coastal promontory, over-looking the Mediterranean Sea. Sir Thomas had travelled widely in the Far East and the garden is home to an exotic variety of flora and fauna dramatically planted throughout, pioneering a unique environment where exotic plants from all over the world could grow in the open together.
