It was in 1835 that James Holland made his first trip to Venice, the same year that he was elected Associate of the Old Water-Colour Society. He continued to paint scenes from Venice, exhibiting numerous views of the city right up until 1869, the year before his death. He painted two watercolours entitled The Rialto which were exhibited by the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1863 and 1864-5 respectively.
