On the advice of the Duchess of Northumberland, Marlow travelled to Italy and then to France between 1765 and 1768. He is an early exponent of the picturesque tradition; mainly working as a topographer, his works, such as the present watercolour, are infused with atmosphere and light. He also displays his ability to inject life and movement into a scene as the figures in the boats vigorously row and navigate around the lake.
