This table was reputedly made for William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858) soon after he bought 14 Chichester Terrace, Kemp Town, Brighton, in 1828. Kemp Town was the estate conceived and built from 1823-1850 by the visionary developer Thomas Kemp (1782-1844).
The 6th Duke describes the round dining-room of 14 Chichester Terrace in Handbook of Chatsworth and Hardwick, London, 1845, and it is also described more recently in Antony Dale's Fashionable Brighton 1812-1860, London, 1947. 14 Chichester Terrace was later the property of the Princess Royal, Duchess of Fife, and the above lot remained in the house until 1972.
