Miss Silvia Burrell was the only child of Sir William and Lady Burrell. Sir William Burrell (1861-1958), scion of the successful Glasgow family and founders of the shipping firm Burrell & Son, which reached peak activity under his direction in 1915. By 1917 however, the ships had all been sold and Burrell was able to devote his remaining years to his passion for collecting, forming a diverse collection of ancient and oriental art, including carpets, pottery, metalwork; European art of the medieval and post-medieval, including an exceptional collection tapestries and Swiss stained and painted glass. The enormous collection, probably the largest ever assembled by one man, numbering about 8000 objects, was given to the City of Glasgow in 1944, but Burrell continued to add to it, right up until his death in 1958.
