Seated in lalitasana on a round double-lotus base, her hands in vitarka and varada mudras, wearing a diaphanous dhoti with thick folds cascading down the legs, multiple necklaces and earrings, her hair pulled up into a coil and secured with elaborate beaded festoons, locks with curled tips spilling down over her shoulders, richly gilt

This unusual bronze follows Indian Pala period prototypes (compare lot 165), of which various examples were in the Chinese Imperial collection and inspired the production of revival pieces. The lower part of the base is separately cast in openwork; compare with a closely related example including the mandorla in the Museo Nazionale d'Arte Orientale, Rome, see D. Mazzeo, Splendori dell'Asia, 2005, cat. no. 16, p. 23.
