The single-panel top set in the frame with 'ice-plate' edge supported on trestle legs, each formed by melon-section vertical rails enclosing an openwork panel with a large upright lingzhi motif above the thick plank, the spandrels also carved as a variety of lingzhi fungus

Southern or yellow cypress is different from Northern cypress, which is paler and available only in narrow planks.

It would appear that most published examples of recessed-leg tables of this kind are far more elaborately decorated than the present lot. For an example of comparable simplicity and elegance, but in huanghuali and with everted flanges, see the one exhibited in Ming Furniture, Grace Wu Bruce, 30 October - 18 November 1995, Hong Kong, p. 20, fig. 9.
