Stony Hill
Immediately after WW II, Fred and Eleanor McCrea planted their vineyard, Stony Hill, on the rugged frontier of Napa. Their model was Chablis, capturing the superb minerality of the vineyard by forgoing new oak and malolactic fermentation. The flavor profile of tart apples, lemon and crushed stones was finely delineated by high acidity. These were among the first California renditions of this varietal tasted by Michael Broadbent in the 1960s and properly stored examples from this era still show the heights this legendary vineyard could obtain. The string of quality was broken when the vineyard succumbed to Pierce's disease in the late 1980s, but will hopefully return with the maturing of the replanted vines in conjunction with a healthy nod toward the winemaking of "Old California" Chardonnay.
