Jennens and Bettridge were highly regarded for their manufacture of papier-mâché wares. Originally based in Birmingham, they took over Henry Clay's workshops in 1816. They established a business in Belgravia, London in 1837 and two years later opened offices in Paris and New York. Jennens and Bettridge served as 'Japanners in Ordinary' to George IV and exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition.
