These torcheres, surmounted by the Dioscuri twins in their Phrygian caps, Castor and Pollux, emblematic of hospitality and the tutelary divinities of sailors, are modelled upon an antique oil-lamp which formed part of the collection of antiquities discovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum and displayed in the Royal Museum at Naples.
