Lister dates this unusual work by Samuel Palmer to circa 1830-32 however it is perhaps more likely to have been executed at the same time as other marine subjects or stormy scenes by the artist, for instance At Hailsham, Sussex: Storm approaching and a Study from nature: Storm approaching of 1821 (Lister, op.cit., pp. 32-33, nos. 30 and 31, illustrated), or the views in Devon with the sea in the distance, 1835 (Lister, op.cit., pp. 102-4, nos. 213-219, illustrated).
A group of later coast scenes executed in Cornwall in 1858 lack the energy of the present watercolour (Lister, op.cit., pp. 183-5, nos. 560-4, illustrated).

An inscription on a label on the backing gives the provenance before L.G. Duke.
