The present bronze is after Michelangelo's famous marble figure of Moses in the church of S. Pietro in Vincoli, Rome. Michelangelo's sculptures have always been popular and smaller scale copies in various materials, such as bronze and terracotta, have been made almost from the moment he executed them. The present bronze is an example of such a copy, probably made for the private contemplation of a connoisseur.
