A PAIR OF NORTH ITALIAN GILTWOOD CONSOLE TABLES
POSSIBLY TUSCANY, CIRCA 1760
Each with a later rectangular Phocaean marble top above a pierced and paterae-carved frieze with a central relief-plaque of a woman seated on a rocky ground with a hound, possibly Diana, flanked by masks, the sides with lion masks, above trailing vines and flowerheads, on square tapering legs with further masks, one marked in ink on back stretcher 'GL' and with a star and stencilled repeatedly '44935', one marked in black in ink '1' and '11' and marked in yellow chalk '44935-1' and with a paper label marked 'g. L No. 2' and another paper label stamped '...316'. The other marked in black ink '2' and with a paper label stamped '2517' and another, later paper label marked '25290', both marbles marked in black chalk '44935', minor variations in the carvings and dimensions, originally presumably part of a larger suite as both friezes have the same carving and do not alternate direction
36 in. (91.5 cm.) high, 42½ in. (108 cm.) wide, 23 in. (58½ cm.) deep (2)
