In 1957 H.R.H. The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon became the first President of the Royal Ballet, while Her Majesty The Queen served as Patron.

Dame Margot Fonteyn (1919-1991) was a famed ballerina who worked extensively with choreographer Frederick Ashton and danced the lead in many great classics including Ondine, a role created especially for her by Ashton.

A specialist in figurative sculpture, most cast in bronze, Nathan David is probably best known for his sculptures of dancers. In 1980 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. In the same year he also unveiled his over life-size sculpture of Dame Margot Fonteyn as Ondine erected at the ballerina's birthplace at Reigate, Surrey.
