Number 3 in Mêne's catalogue, the present model first appeared in wax at the 1876 Salon and in bronze the following year. The picador is shown nobly riding with a lady's fan seemingly just thrown at the feet of his mount. This equestrian group compares with Mêne's other major horse and rider groups, such as Valet de Chasse Louis XV and Groupe de Chiens en defaut.
