The barometer's triumphal-arched and Doric-columned tabernacle, reflects the Roman taste introduced circa 1700 as featured in a 'barometer and thermometer together' trade-sheet pattern issued by the 'Old Bayly' manufacturer, John Patrick (fl. 1686-1720?) (N. Goodison, English Barometers , London, 1969, pl. 8). A similar case features on the Fleet Street manufacturer Benjamin Cole's barometer at Pallant House, Chichester (National Art Collections Review, 1989, no. 3433).
