[CIVIL WAR]. EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION. By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation. General Orders, No. 139. Washington, D.C., 24 September 1862. 2 leaves, with holes from previous binding. PRELIMINARY ISSUE OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION: The fourth edition, and the first issued to the military, almost four months before the Proclamation was made public. The present issue is the first widely disseminated issue, though still not to the general public. The final proclamation appeared on 1 January 1863; see the General Order No. 1 for 1863 below. Eberstadt 4 ("often described as the first separate appearance of the preliminary proclamation").

A FINE SERIES OF GENERAL ORDERS, INCLUDING TWO EARLY PRINTINGS OF THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION. Captain John Horne Young of the 15th U.S. Infantry was commended for meritorious service at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. He died in 1868. Many of the general orders in his series were docketed at Nashville. (3)
