Provenance: William Lee, Bart. (presentation inscription on title-page); Archibald Philip Primrose, fifth earl of Rosebery, Prime Minister of England, 1894-95 (ALS to Rosebery from John Morley tipped-in, small Rosebery/Durdans stamp on title-page and p. 99, gift inscription on verso of front wrapper); armorial bookplate.

FIRST EDITION of Burke's masterpiece, with early issue points: B8, E2, F6, H2 and H3 are cancels, [A]2 is state a with the ornamental flower pointing to the right; the title is in state a, with the "M" in the imprint immediately below the first "D" of "Dodsley"; and 2A2 is in state x with no press figure.
