MIDDLE CHIMU SILVER FACE BEAKER
SICAN, CA. A.D. 1000-1250
The features repousse from a single sheet of silver, with large almond-shaped eyes, beaked nose and small mouth, embossed with rows of beadwork as the woven headband and similarly decorated, graduated backflap, the tall flaring spout with everted rim.
Head beakers made of one or more sheets of metal were produced on the North Coast of Peru by finely trained Chimu artists. These large beakers were probably used for chicha, a fermented corn beverage made for ceremonies and rituals.
