L'ensemble de sculptures d'Alfred-Auguste Janniot présenté ici provient des jardins de la propriété de monsieur Ducos, La Thébaïde, située en Seine et Oise, près de Paris.
Son propriétaire rencontre Janniot par l'intermédiaire de son propre père, ami de régiment de Janniot durant la première guerre mondiale. Industriel aisé, pétri de culture classique (le nom de sa propriété reprend le titre d'une tragédie de Racine), il acquiert plusieurs pièces de l'artiste. Il souhaite orner le parc de sa propriété de sculptures, dans le goût classique. Il entame une véritable collaboration avec l'artiste. Ils visitent ensemble les jardins des chateaux de Versailles et d'Anet pour s'en inspirer et réfléchissent à l'iconographie. Janniot y place également des oeuvres qu'il affectionne particulièrement conçues pour des programmes antérieurs. Réfugié un temps chez Mr Ducos pendant la guerre, après la destruction de son atelier lors d'un bombardement Janniot dispose d'un atelier sur place où, aidé de ses praticiens, il réalise l'ensemble des oeuvres commandées. De fait, Janniot devient, ainsi que son épouse Cécile, un proche de la famille. Conçues pour des emplacements fixes, ses oeuvres étaient souvent déplacées selon le goût de leur propriétaire. A sa disparition, l'ensemble fut dispersé et beaucoup de pièces endommagées.
This collection of sculptures by Alfred-Auguste Janniot (1889-1969) belonged to the park of 'La Thébaïde', property of Mr Ducos, and has been executed during the second part of the 40s. The patron of that commission, Mr. Ducos, met Janniot thanks to his father, who knew the sculptor from his military period, during the first World War. A wealthy industrialist, stepped into classic culture (the name 'La Thébaïde' choosen after the tragedy written by Racine), he planed to fit the garden of his coutnry residence with sculptures. Being very involved in the project, Ducos used to visit the parks of Château de Versailles and Château d'Anet with Janniot, sharing the inspiration and discussing the iconographic programme. After the destruction of his Parisian workshop due to a bomb attack in 1943, Janniot and his wife Cécile were welcome by Ducos and his family at 'La Thébaïde'. The sculptor had a workshop in the property where he designed and executed all the sculptures with his practitioners. Ducos loved to move the sculptures around, even if originally they were all thought for a specific location in the garden. After his death, the sculptures were progressively removed from the garden and a lot were damaged
