Gow was a Scot who liked to paint subjects relating to the Jacobite cause. In 1897, the year before this painting was exhibited, he showed a picture entitled 'Waiting for Prince Charlie' at the Royal Academy (no. 97). In the present work, the two men on the sands are too well dressed to be smugglers: the presence of a third horse suggests they are preparing to receive ashore a person of some importance from the ship to which they are signalling.
