This is a copy after the painting by Delaroche commissioned by Louisa, 6th Countess of Sandwich in 1838 (now in a private collection). Delaroche depicted Napoleon in the uniform of a Colonel of the Grenadiers de la garde à pied, standing in his office in the Tuileries Palace. Delaroche's portrait is historically accurate and he no doubt based elements of the composition, such as the pose and uniform, on David's celebrated Portrait de Napoléon dans son cabinet de travail of 1812 (Washington, The National Gallery).
