The case by Balthazar Lieutaud, mid-18th Century
The later white enamelled Roman and Arabic dial with a later movement inscribed 'JAMES HOWDEN EDINBURGH' within a waisted case decorated with scrolling foliage, the arched hood surmounted by an oak-leaf draped vase and mounted with acanthus clasps centred by a mask of Hercules, flanked by further scrolling oak leaf and putto's heads and above a glazed opening mounted with ribbon-bound gardener's tools, on foliate cast channelled feet, the bracket similarly decorated with scrolling foliate and trailing husk clasps and a central mask of a faun, with oak-leaf garlands and terminating in a fruiting foliate boss, the case with remains of stamp 'B...', the bracket stamped 'B.LIEUTAUD', the carcase later adapted to fit the associated triple fusee movement, partially remounted

With its distinctive mounts including gardening tools, a neoclassical urn and putto's heads, this bracket clock is of a celebrated model by Balthazar Lieutaud (maître in 1749) , who also executed another example, sold, Ader, Paris, 20 June 1957, lot 41.
One of the most celebrated clock-case-makers of his time, Lieutaud originated from a family of cabinet-makers and clock-makers. He settled on the Île de la Cité, the clock-makers quarter.
