These splendid tabourets were supplied by Michel Cresson (maître in 1740) for the Église (now Cathedrale) de Saint-Louis at Versailles. Louis XV laid the first stone for the church in 1743 and the inauguration took place in 1754. Cresson's tabourets, which bear the virtually unknown brand 'SL', were almost certainly supplied around this date (P. Verlet, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe, Paris, 1982, fig. 11).
