Hercules murdered his friend Iphitus in a fit of rage and, as punishment, was sold as a slave to Omphale, queen of Lydia, for a period of three years. During this time he grew effeminate and wore women's clothes and adornment. He was made to carried out domestic tasks including yarn-spinning, as depicted in the present miniature.
