Lipchitz usually made drawings prior to executing his ideas for sculptures three dimensionally. This is a very good example of his early cubist work. A close correlation can be drawn between this work and the artist's sculptures of 1915-1916, such as Sculpture (Wilkinson, no. 37), in which the same obelisque form can be found.
