etching, 1923, on Arches, signed and initialled in pencil, annotated 'Etat', a rare unrecorded proof of the first state (of two) before the aquatint, (Kornfeld records only three impressions in this state), printed by Louis Fort, with margins, some light soiling at the sheet margins, soft rippling at the lower sheet edge, a faint vertical crease on the reverse not showing through, remains of old hinges at the sheet corners and a few handling marks verso, otherwise in good condition

A note on the mount described the signature as being signed by the artist in the 1960s as a 'courtesy', and that the print was formerly in the collections of J.M. Oenhausen, and the printer Louis Fort.
