signed 'Max' (lower right) and inscribed 'quoting from one of his Gifford Lectures-/Lord Balfour (whose turn it is to play): "If calculable probability be indeed common sense reduced to calculation, intuitive probability/lies deeper. It supports common sense, and it supplies the ultimate ground-be it secure or insecure-of" etcetera, etcetera.' (lower centre, in the margin)
