The present watercolour depicts a farmhouse similar to that in a watercolour in the Paul Mellon Center, Yale (see J. Witt, William Henry Hunt, London, 1982, pl. 14).

This watercolour belongs to Hunt's early period and is probably dateable to circa 1815-20. In 1814 he joined the Society of Painters in Oil and Water-colour. By his mid-teens he had successfully found a generous patron in Dr Thomas Monro and joined the likes of Turner, Girtin, Cotman and Linnell who had attended Monro's drawing academy before him.
