The stamp F.L. is that of François Lieutaud (d. 1748). Born in 1665 to a family of sculptors, Lieutaud was elected maître in Marseille and in 1710 he moved to join his son in the Cloister of St. Jean Lateran. It is possible that this bureau plat was made by Lieutaud during the Régence period and updated with goût grec mounts during the late Louis XV period.

The use of the M. CRESSON stamp remains mysterious, and must be either a previously unrecorded ébéniste or the menuisier Michel Cresson (maître in 1740) acting in the capacity of restorer or retailer.
