This medallion-backed cabriolet chair, with its fluted frame and foliate-wrapped arms, relates to the antique fashion adopted in the 1780s by Gillows of London and Lancaster under guidance from architects such as James Wyatt (d. 1813). A drawing for this type of oval-back padded chair with downswept arms is illustrated L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs: 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, p. 135, fig. 270.
A related pair of chairs, possibly by Gillows, was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 23 October 2002, lot 191. A set of four giltwood armchairs of a very similar form, in the manner of Gillow, was sold from the Estate of Mrs. Charles W. Engelhard, Christie's, New York, 18 March 2005, lot 380.
