The figures along the spine appear to be the planets. The central figure is certainly the moon, and that above it with a sword raised over its head is Mars. The quality of work on this handle is extremely fine; considerably more elaborate than that found on most ewer handles of the period. The original ewer for which it was made must have been spectacular.
