An early gilt-brass and iron drum-shaped timepiece
Probably German. Circa 1590
The re-gilt dial plate with touchpieces to the outer perimeter, the outer chapter ring calibrated I to XII and then to XII, the inner chapter ring calibrated 1 to 12 to 24 and centred by a sunburst with the sun's face partially obscured by the boss for the later steel hand, the movement with thick circular iron plates secured by three chamfered pillars riveted to the backplate and pinned to the dial plate, gut fusee and capped barrel, all wheels of steel with typical decorative potances for the crown and re-built verge with dumbell balance and hog's bristle regulator in the form of a right angled arm with dot calibration punched into the backplate, the re-gilt case decorated with formalised strapwork and foliage with two male figures, one holding an axe the other wearing a hat and holding a sword and with further engraving of a hound chasing a hare and a running stag
