A silver Butterfield-type compass sundial
Butterfield A Paris. Fourth quarter 17th Century
The dial plate engraved with the signature and four hour scales 4-12, 1-8 for latitudes 45°, 48°, 52°, and 56° alternately in Arabic and Roman numerals (that for 43° running only 5-12, 1-7), with engraved floral decoration around the base and on the face of the sprung folding gnomon with bird-shaped pointer to the latitude scale 40°-60°, the glazed compass engraved with sixteen compass points with initials in French, a fleur-de-lys at north, and with a blued-iron needle with brass cap, the underside of the plate and compass box engraved with the latitudes for thirty-three continental cities and towns arranged in four cadrans including, unusually, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, with foliate engraving to the gnomon spring bar and a turned silver foot, the (later) octagonal case lined in purple plush with silk in the lid, covered in gilt-tooled red leather with brass hinge and push-button catch; signed Butterfield AParis
