Cyrille Martin has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.

The present work, with its classical theme and densely woven divisionist technique, is an example of Martin's late symbolist period. It was during this time that Martin won great public recognition, including the award of the Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1898.
