Gourlay Steell was a Scottish animal painter and the son of an Edinburgh engraver. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. He was made an RSA in 1859 and appointed painter to the Highland and Agricultural Society. After Landseer's death Queen Victoria bestowed upon him the title Animal Painter for Scotland and in doing so ensured him a virtual monopoly on animal and sporting commissions in Scotland.
