Count, and from 1764 Prince von Kaunitz-Rietberg distinguished himself at the congress of Aix-la-Chapelle and, as Austrian ambassador to the French court from 1750-1752, turned old adverseries into friends. In 1753 he was appointed chancellor and for 40 years directed Austrian politics.
