Sir George Wakeman, was the son of Edward Wakeman (1592-1659) and his wife, Mary, daughter of Richard Cotton of Warblington, Sussex. A Roman Catholic, he studied at St. Omer in 1647 and Pavia and possibly in Paris where he may have graduated in medicine. He was a staunch Royalist and on his return to England, he became involved in a plot against Oliver Cromwell and was imprisoned until the Restoration. On 13 February 1661 he was created a baronet as Wakeman of Beckford by Charles II. He was appointed in 1670 as physician in ordinary to Queen Catherine as he was considered the best Roman Catholic physician in England. He was accused by Titus Oates of planning to poison King
Charles II in 1678 but was acquited the following year.
