The collector specialised in two main themes; the representation of children and miniatures depicting princely sitters with a deliberate emphasis on German and Austrian 18th and 19th century rulers. The miniatures of children were painted by celebrated English and Austrian miniature painters such as Grimaldi, Egley, Peter and Schwager, and charming group portraits of several children together, such as those by Samuel Shelley, were a great favourite. Among the historical pieces, Empress Maria Theresa and her forebears and descendants were a passion of the collector and are a highlight of the group. Empress Maria Theresa's life long adversary, King Frederick the Great was well represented as can be seen in the important triple portrait depicting Frederick, his brother and nephew, and in the historically important wedding anniversary portrait depicting Frederick and his wife. The appearance on the art market of pieces of exceptional quality outside the range of the two main themes was a temptation this passionate collector could not resist: Daffinger's ravishing portrait of Princess Clementina Metternich, Füger's distinguished young lady or Hilliard's superb Elizabethan gentleman with a helmet in the background had the further appeal of prestigious provenance and extensive bibliography. Keeping the dedicated reference library on miniatures up to date was a further commitment. The dispersal of this collection will give new enthusiasts the opportunity to acquire pieces of both aesthetic and historical importance in the spirit begun by the collector.
