Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905),was born on 6 February 1838 at Keinton-Mandeville near Glastonbury. He was educated in London and spent some time as a Clerk in the City. His first appearance was at the Sunderland Theatre in 1856 and he performed in Edinburgh for three years, appearing in London at the Princess's Theatre in 1859. By 1871 he had appeared in most of the London theatres before settling at the Lyceum under the managment of Mrs Bateman. His successes included Macbeth, Othello, Richard III, and the Lyons Mail. In 1878 he set up his own management of the Lyceum sharing his successes with Ellen Terry. Irving was knighted in 1895, and died on 13 October 1905, he was sixty seven.
Walter Lacy (1809-1898), real name Williams, first appeared on stage in Edinburgh in 1829. He played Charles Surface at the Haymarket, London in 1838 and performed with Charles Kean at the Princess's Theatre in 1852. His successes included Edmund ('King Lear'), Benedick, Comus, Falconbridge, Touchstone, and Ghost ('Hamlet').
He died in 1898 having been a life long friend of Henry Irving.
